There are two types of aviation fuel: Avgas (aviation gasoline) for use in aircraft with piston engines. The company that regulates petroleum products in India, Indian oil identifies jet fuel as SKF, which means "Superior kerosene oil".Īviation fuel is a highly specialized category of petroleum-based fuel designed specifically for aircraft use. It is a more refined version of kerosene and burns better than diesel fuel. This means the quality of aviation fuel powering the pistons or turbines needs to receive the same stringent assessment as the aircraft before taking to the skies. For the aviation industry, second to the aircraft itself, fuel is keeping the pilots and passengers safe in the air. However, since I was promoting petroleum Testing instruments during my last leg of my career, I always thought about the aviation fuel used in the aircraft. There are many elements to this belief, like construction quality of the material of the aircraft, efficiency of air traffic control system with radar, alertness, and efficiency of the pilot, weather condition, safety protocols used by ground staff, regular maintenance of aircraft engine. When I travel on a flight, I think about the driving force of belief, that we are safe traveling more than 40,000 feet above the ground or ocean or mountains and reaching after more than 2 hours or more, the destination.
